A PayPal Invoicing Alternative Without the Per-Invoice Fee

PayPal Invoicing costs nothing to send, but you pay a fee every time a client pays through it. Here is what that adds up to, and when PayPal is still the better choice.

The short answer: Stay with PayPal Invoicing if your clients want to pay by card or PayPal from the invoice, or you invoice rarely. Switch if your clients pay by bank transfer: in the US, PayPal charges 3.49% + $0.49 on every invoice paid through PayPal checkout ($70.29 on a $2,000 invoice), while Simple Invoice Generator Pro is a flat $9/month and takes nothing from your payments.

We make Simple Invoice Generator, so this isn't a neutral review. To keep it useful, every PayPal Invoicing fact below comes from PayPal Invoicing's own pages (listed under Sources) and was checked on 27 October 2026, and our own gaps are in the table too.

Why people look for a PayPal Invoicing alternative

  • The fee is taken from every invoice a client pays online: 3.49% + $0.49 through PayPal checkout in the US. On $2,000 a month of invoices, that is about $70 a month.
  • The fee grows with your income: the more you invoice, the more you pay. A flat plan costs the same at $500 or $5,000 a month.
  • Rates differ by country and by how the client pays, so it is hard to know in advance what an invoice will cost you.

Stay with PayPal Invoicing if…

  • Your clients want to pay by card, PayPal or Venmo from the invoice.
  • You invoice rarely, so a percentage fee costs less than a monthly plan.
  • You need estimates or a mobile app.
  • You already keep your business money in PayPal.

Switch to Simple Invoice Generator if…

  • Your clients pay by bank transfer and you don't want to give up 3–4% of each payment.
  • You want a flat $9/month instead of a fee that grows with every invoice.
  • You want automatic reminders, saved clients and a clean PDF without a payments account.
  • You want to try it before creating an account: the editor works without sign-up.

What you give up

Simple Invoice Generator does one job: creating, sending and tracking invoices. Before switching, know that it does not have:

  • Card payments on the invoice. Clients pay you directly, by bank transfer, PayPal or however you ask, and you mark the invoice paid.
  • Recurring invoices. You can duplicate last month's invoice in one click, but nothing is sent on a schedule.
  • Accounting. No expenses, time tracking, bank feeds or reports beyond a monthly revenue chart.
  • A mobile app, team accounts or an import tool. It runs in any browser, including on your phone, for one user.

Moving over from PayPal Invoicing

  1. Keep your past invoices in PayPal Invoicing, or download them as PDFs for your records.
  2. Open the editor and fill in your first invoice. No sign-up is needed to try it.
  3. Type your next invoice number (for example INV-0143) so your numbering carries on, and set your usual currency, notes and payment terms.
  4. Create a free account to save it and email it to your client with the PDF attached. Your company details, logo, notes and terms fill in automatically from then on.
  5. Save each client the first time you invoice them, and they fill in with one click next time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does PayPal charge for invoices?

PayPal Invoicing has no set-up or monthly fees; you pay when a client pays an invoice online. In the US the fee is 3.49% + $0.49 when the client pays through PayPal checkout or Venmo, and 2.99% + $0.49 when they pay by card. Fees vary by country.

Is there an invoicing tool without transaction fees?

Yes. Simple Invoice Generator doesn't process payments, so it takes nothing from them: your client pays you directly by bank transfer (or however you ask on the invoice) and you mark the invoice paid. The free plan covers 3 invoices; Pro is $9/month or $79/year for unlimited invoices and automatic reminders.

Can my clients still pay me with PayPal?

Yes. Add your PayPal details to the payment notes on the invoice. If a client pays you through PayPal, PayPal's normal fees for receiving payments apply to that payment.
