A Simpler FreshBooks Alternative for Freelancers

FreshBooks is full accounting software. If you mostly send invoices and get paid, here is what switching gets you, what it costs you, and when you should stay.

The short answer: Stay with FreshBooks if you use its accounting, expenses, time tracking or card payments. Switch if you mainly create and send invoices: Simple Invoice Generator Pro is $9/month with unlimited clients, while FreshBooks Lite is $23/month and covers 5 billable clients.

We make Simple Invoice Generator, so this isn't a neutral review. To keep it useful, every FreshBooks fact below comes from FreshBooks's own pages (listed under Sources) and was checked on 26 September 2026, and our own gaps are in the table too.

Why people look for a FreshBooks alternative

  • Price: the cheapest plan, Lite, is $23/month, and it covers only 5 billable clients. Billing more clients means Plus at $43/month.
  • Most of what you pay for is accounting: expenses, reports, bank reconciliation. If an accountant already handles your books, you are paying for features you don't open.
  • FreshBooks Payments, its built-in card processing, is only for businesses in the US and Canada. Elsewhere you connect Stripe or PayPal instead.

Stay with FreshBooks if…

  • You want invoicing, expenses, time tracking and bookkeeping in one place.
  • Your clients pay by card or ACH straight from the invoice.
  • You bill on a schedule and need recurring invoices.
  • You work with a team or an accountant who logs in.

Switch to Simple Invoice Generator if…

  • You mostly create invoices, email them and track who has paid.
  • You bill more than 5 clients and don't want to pay $43/month for it.
  • You want invoices chased automatically without learning accounting software.
  • You want to try it before creating an account: the editor works without sign-up.

What you give up

Simple Invoice Generator does one job: creating, sending and tracking invoices. Before switching, know that it does not have:

  • Card payments on the invoice. Clients pay you directly, by bank transfer, PayPal or however you ask, and you mark the invoice paid.
  • Recurring invoices. You can duplicate last month's invoice in one click, but nothing is sent on a schedule.
  • Accounting. No expenses, time tracking, bank feeds or reports beyond a monthly revenue chart.
  • A mobile app, team accounts or an import tool. It runs in any browser, including on your phone, for one user.

Moving over from FreshBooks

  1. Keep your past invoices in FreshBooks, or download them as PDFs for your records.
  2. Open the editor and fill in your first invoice. No sign-up is needed to try it.
  3. Type your next invoice number (for example INV-0143) so your numbering carries on, and set your usual currency, notes and payment terms.
  4. Create a free account to save it and email it to your client with the PDF attached. Your company details, logo, notes and terms fill in automatically from then on.
  5. Save each client the first time you invoice them, and they fill in with one click next time.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free alternative to FreshBooks?

FreshBooks has no free plan, only a 30-day trial. Simple Invoice Generator is free for your first 3 invoices with no card, then $9/month or $79/year for unlimited invoices and clients.

Can I move my invoices from FreshBooks?

There is no import tool. Most people keep their past invoices in FreshBooks (or download them as PDFs) and create new ones here, typing the next invoice number so the numbering carries on.

Does Simple Invoice Generator accept card payments like FreshBooks?

No. Clients pay you directly, by bank transfer, PayPal or however you ask on the invoice, and you mark the invoice paid. If card payments on the invoice matter to you, FreshBooks is the better fit.
