A Simpler Invoice Ninja Alternative

Invoice Ninja is powerful and can be self-hosted. Here is when that is worth it, and when a simpler tool is the better fit.

The short answer: Stay with Invoice Ninja if you want to self-host, need a client portal or take card payments from the invoice. Switch if you want something simpler: Simple Invoice Generator Pro is $9/month with unlimited clients and automatic reminders, against $14/month for Invoice Ninja Pro.

We make Simple Invoice Generator, so this isn't a neutral review. To keep it useful, every Invoice Ninja fact below comes from Invoice Ninja's own pages (listed under Sources) and was checked on 26 September 2026, and our own gaps are in the table too.

Why people look for a Invoice Ninja alternative

  • Prices went up on 1 January 2026: Pro is now $14/month or $140/year.
  • The hosted free plan is limited to 5 clients and carries "Created by Invoice Ninja" branding.
  • Automatic reminders need a paid plan.
  • Reviewers mention a learning curve: there is a lot to set up before the first invoice.

Stay with Invoice Ninja if…

  • You want to self-host and keep full control of your data.
  • You need a client portal, quotes, expenses or time tracking.
  • Your clients pay by card from the invoice.
  • You have 5 clients or fewer and want recurring invoices for free.

Switch to Simple Invoice Generator if…

  • You want the simplest possible path from blank page to sent invoice.
  • You want automatic reminders and unlimited clients for $9/month instead of $14.
  • You don't want to run or maintain a server.

What you give up

Simple Invoice Generator does one job: creating, sending and tracking invoices. Before switching, know that it does not have:

  • Card payments on the invoice. Clients pay you directly, by bank transfer, PayPal or however you ask, and you mark the invoice paid.
  • Recurring invoices. You can duplicate last month's invoice in one click, but nothing is sent on a schedule.
  • Accounting. No expenses, time tracking, bank feeds or reports beyond a monthly revenue chart.
  • A mobile app, team accounts or an import tool. It runs in any browser, including on your phone, for one user.

Moving over from Invoice Ninja

  1. Keep your past invoices in Invoice Ninja, or download them as PDFs for your records.
  2. Open the editor and fill in your first invoice. No sign-up is needed to try it.
  3. Type your next invoice number (for example INV-0143) so your numbering carries on, and set your usual currency, notes and payment terms.
  4. Create a free account to save it and email it to your client with the PDF attached. Your company details, logo, notes and terms fill in automatically from then on.
  5. Save each client the first time you invoice them, and they fill in with one click next time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Invoice Ninja still open source?

Its code is public, and you can self-host it for free, but it is licensed under the Elastic License 2.0, which is source-available rather than an open-source licence. Removing its branding when self-hosting needs a $40/year white-label licence.

How many clients does the Invoice Ninja free plan allow?

The hosted free plan allows 5 clients with unlimited invoices. Simple Invoice Generator's free plan has no client limit but stops at 3 invoices; Pro is unlimited.

Can I import my Invoice Ninja data?

There is no import tool. Keep your history in Invoice Ninja (or export it) and start new invoices here, typing the next invoice number so the numbering carries on.
